The future
redevelopment of the Pleasant Hill site
This DVD has been produced by
the F.J. Foundation to aid discussion and debate
relating to the future redevelopment of the Pleasant
Hill site.
The Conservation Management Plan that was released
on 15/11/05 recommends the preservation or reconstruction
of elements of the buildings constructed between
1947 and 1955 (plus the peacock/glasshouse built
in December 1965).
The theme of the recommendations is to conserve
elements of the infrastructure representative
of the 1950's look and argues that 'the site if
of historical significance for its expression
of Australian culture and society immediately
post-Second World War'.
The images in the DVD illustrate the dynamic
nature of the development of the business and
the infrastructure. The recommendations would
result in a 'backdrop' to the gardens unseen for
the last 45 years.
The heritage of Fletcher Jones and Staff is much
more profound than the reconstruction of building
facades that no longer exist and the implied demolition
of structurally sound elements of current buildings.
